JULIAN MULVEY

Julian Mulvey is a Democratic media consultant and former partner at the firm Devine Mulvey Longabaugh, Inc..  Julian’s advertising has been called “poetry” by Secretary Hillary Clinton and “fake and fraudulent” by former President Donald Trump.  The New York Times called him one of the “architects” of Sen. Sanders’ 2016 Presidential Campaign that Jacobin Magazine said reinvigorated the American left. The BBC’s Kim Ghattas called him an “ad genius.”

In 2024, Julian led the teams that produced the opening video, “Freedom”, for the Democratic National Convention that introduced Vice President Kamala Harris and kicked off the convention in Chicago along with five other prime-time films.  With a soundtrack by Beyonce and voiced by actor Jeffery Wright, “Freedom” was seen by a live and social audience of tens of millions.

In the prior Presidential cycle, Julian and Tad Devine produced the Joe Biden for President and Democratic National Committee’s joint advertising that infuriated Trump, who called them "low-life Biden handlers".

In 2016, Julian was a senior advisor to Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign and responsible for the TV advertising.  The New York Times, The Washington Post and Esquire Magazine wrote the ads were “powerful,” “emotional” and “the best… ever seen.”  The Daily Beast called the 2016 Sanders ad campaign “pure gold.”  Bloomberg said Sanders’ opening biographical ad was “the best of the cycle, maybe several cycles.”  The ads “stand out in the crowded airwaves,” noted CNN’s John King. The Inquisitr stated, “The Sanders campaign has become famous for its masterful storytelling and moving imagery.”

One ad in particular caught the public’s imagination.  Titled “America,” the spot is scored by the Simon & Garfunkel track of the same name. MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough called “America” the ad of the year, saying, “It’s one of the most hopeful ads we’ve seen in a very long time.” USA Today’s Susan Page and The Hill likened it to President Reagan’s 1984 classic, “Morning in America.”

Julian met Tad Devine while taking his class at Boston University.  He was are search assistant at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government on the National Information Infrastructure project, or what we would now call “the internet”.  His animated short “Social Security” produced with Nate Ackerman and Free Range Graphics in 2002, was one of the first pieces of political media to go viral and reach over a million views.  He has lectured at Miami University, Yale and Harvard.

When not making ads Julian loves making spaghetti, watching award winning television and reading history.  His play about the friendship and feud of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, “Rush’s Dream”, performed to sold-out shows off-Broadway.  While never reaching Hamiltonian success, historian Garry Wills called it “a beautiful story, beautifully told.”
